The town of St. Marys, Ontario, is mourning the loss of a beloved community member and esteemed legal professional—Ben Waghorn. As a partner at Waghorn, Stephens, Sipos and Poulton Law Firm, Ben’s career spanned over two decades of dedicated service, and his leadership extended well beyond the courtroom. His passing is a profound loss to his family, colleagues, and the community he loved deeply.
Ben’s journey began in St. Marys, where he was raised with a strong sense of community and purpose. Before pursuing law, Ben completed a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at GMI Engineering and Management Institute (now Kettering University) in Flint, Michigan. His engineering education was complemented by hands-on co-op work at General Motors Canada in Oshawa, where he gained invaluable experience in the corporate world.
After working in GM’s marketing department, Ben made the pivotal decision to switch gears and pursue a career in law—a choice driven by his desire to serve and make a difference. Joining Waghorn, Stephens, Sipos and Poulton as a first-year law student in 1996, Ben quickly established himself as a dedicated and talented lawyer. He was called to the Bar in 2000 and spent his early practice exploring nearly all areas of law, including litigation and solicitor’s work.
His versatile experience provided him with a broad perspective that served his clients well. Since 2006, Ben focused primarily on solicitor’s practice, specializing in real estate, estate planning, estate administration, and corporate and commercial law. His meticulous approach and compassionate counsel earned him the trust and respect of many clients navigating critical legal decisions.
Ben’s commitment to community service was equally notable. During his law school years, he co-coached a local mixed soccer team composed of young children, demonstrating his dedication to youth development and community involvement. His passion for local heritage and sports was further exemplified through his work with the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Marys. Ben chaired a fundraising campaign from 1998-2000 and served as Chair of the Board of Directors from 2000-2006. His leadership helped ensure the preservation and celebration of baseball history in his hometown, strengthening community pride and identity.
A true local at heart, Ben appreciated the special qualities of St. Marys—a place he was proud to call home. He believed in giving back and being an active participant in community life, embodying the values of service, humility, and integrity. His involvement in local initiatives, his leadership, and his genuine kindness made him a role model to many.
Ben’s passing marks a significant loss, but his legacy endures through the lives he touched—his family, friends, colleagues, and community members. His dedication to his profession, his community, and his family exemplifies the best qualities of a leader and a caring citizen. His contributions have left a lasting imprint on St. Marys, and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.
